America’s Pastor Was My Pastor Too

Billy Graham, known as “America’s Pastor” for his years of advising our Presidents and for his incredible ministry both in the United States and around the world.  Countless believers can trace the start of their relationship with Christ at one of his rallies.  He is an incredible spiritual figure in Christian heritage, especially in recent memory.

My shoulders slump as I think of how I never got to meet Billy Graham.  On this side of heaven, I will never get to shake his hand and thank him for his influence on my life.

He’ll never know what his testimony would teach me.  His rules of making sure to not meet with a woman alone, and to always live above reproach.  His integrity that lasted until he took his final breath.  That’s the type of legacy and example that young man in the ministry needs.

He’ll never know that as a very young pastor, nervous on a Saturday night about taking the pulpit in the morning, I would watch Billy Graham preach.  It was like Knute Rockne or Herb Brooks walked into my family room and gave me a spiritual rallying cry.  After listening to him, I was absolutely pumped to deliver God’s precious Word in just a few short hours.

He’ll never know my first son has a middle name Graham, named after the man I admired from afar for all these years.  My boy will learn what a great man he was and all he did for the Kingdom of God.

He’ll never know I got a shelf with his books on them.  No it’s not a shrine.  It’s a reminder of one of my mentors, who was able to disciple me from the television, through his writings, and by his example.

So thank you Reverend Billy Graham.  One day I will have the chance to tell you thank you.  Until then, your sermons, your books, and your example will continue to teach this young student.

It’s Time to Pray

We need to pray.  We need to pray for revival.  We need to pray our country turns back to God, instead of turning our back on God.  We need to pray for this election that Christianity would have a voice, and God would be glorified.  We must do what the money in our wallets and in our kid’s piggy banks says “In God We Trust”.  Tomorrow is going to take a lot of trust, but we are in God’s capable hands.  We need Him more than ever.  Pray.  Trust.  Hope.  And remember that God is still in control.

What is Your Life?

Take a look at James 4:14.  What a profound question in the heart of that verse…”What is Your Life?”.  James decides to answer the question with a reference to the brevity of life.  But the question got me thinking.  At the end of my life as my life flashes before my eyes, how will I answer that question?  Even in my 30’s, reviewing the slide show of my life in my mind brings numerous emotions to the surface such as joy, excitement, wonder, curiosity, fear, grief, triumph, sadness, bewilderment (junior high days), pride, thankfulness…you get the idea.

But as I keep going back to that daunting question, “What is Your Life?”, it is not easy finding a defining moment or answer for that question.  That is, until you take a deeper, more spiritual look at your life.  What determines a successful life is not necessarily the moments you had on earth, but what was done for eternity.  The little girl I sat with on the steps of a Backyard Bible Club and led to the Savior, the moments of reading God’s Word to my kids, or the acts for others that were purely motivated to simply share the love of Jesus…these are the moments that determine my life.

I encourage you to take a look at this video, and through the tears that will probably form in your eyes, think about your life in rewind.  When your eyes close in this life, will they open to an eternity in paradise?  The only way to know for sure is to ask God to forgive your sins, and put your eternal destiny in God’s hands, and trust Him with your life.  For more information go here, or watch this video, listen to my sermon from yesterday, or comment below.
